Can't I just do this myself?

Sure, but you'll need to setup resilliant SMTP servers, create test accounts at all the free ISP's like Hotmail and Yahoo, sign up (and pay) for other ISP's like Earthlink and Comcast, create relationships with them, set up a few virtual machines to cover different operating systems, and purchase and install each of the spam filters we test in, constantly monitor blacklists, manually test in all major email clients and browsers.
This would cost you in excess of £10,000.
